Welcome to the beautiful world of math!
Middle Year Program (MYP) mathematics focuses on variety of skill sets in math. These include but are not limited to investigations and patterns, real life problems, solving mathematical problems in familiar and unfamiliar context, and properly communicating the work (terminology, methods, transitions, form, etc.)
MYP math focuses on 3 main key concepts of form, logic, and relationships. Teacher should focus on relating one of these concepts in every units. For examples, a real life problem that involves students using a best option will require them to use logic to select a valid and efficient solution, explaining the validity of their conclusion. Teachers should also try to thoroughly incorporate one or two following approaches to learning in their units: thinking, social, communication, self-management, and research skills. For example, I dedicate 3+ classes in my unit of statistics in MYP 4 to teach students how to effectively work in groups. In these classes, students are divided into groups of 3-4, having the roles of manager, communicator, and writer. I spend 15-20% of the class teaching them group work skills and use the rest to get them to work on projects relating to the concepts.
The 4 branches of mathematics that are covered in MYP math are numbers, algebra, geometry and trigonometry, and statistics and probability. I will add inormation to these sections as they become available.
